The 19th annual Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) awards recently took place, honoring the best in international journalism and factual content across TV, radio and digital platforms. The event, held in Church House Westminster in London, saw entries from countries including South Korea, Norway, Canada, Germany, South Africa, the UAE, Taiwan, France, and the UK.
The AIBs, known for celebrating the most compelling factual productions and journalistic endeavors, attracted over 400 hours of content from around the world this year. The entries were evaluated by 50 judges from across the globe, marking the immense scale and scope of the competition.
AIB’s chief executive, Simon Spanswick, opened the evening, highlighting the significance of the competition in a world increasingly marred by chaos and danger. He stressed the critical role of journalism in holding power to account and the need for journalists and producers to be vocal about their work and its importance.
The awards covered a wide range of categories, and the attendees got a chance to see and hear clips from all the shortlisted entries. Among the award recipients was Sir Michael Palin, who won in the Specialist Factual TV/Video category for his program “Michael Palin: Into Iraq.” He expressed his interest in news and reporting on different places and praised the challenging areas the participants ventured into for their stories.
Other winners included “The War in Ukraine” by BBC News for best TV/Video in the News Coverage category and “Hell on Earth: Darién Gap – The Deadly Migrant Route” by ITN Productions for Channel 4 for the best Short Feature TV/Video. “Eternal Spring” by Lofty Sky Entertainment won in the Historical Documentary category, while “Fault Lines: Blood Sport” by Al Jazeera English was recognized in Sports Journalism.
The 20th AIBs are scheduled to open for entries in April 2024, with the awards event taking place in London shortly after the U.S. Presidential Elections.
