Economist Podcasts+: The Future of Premium Journalism in Audio
The Economist, known for its global reporting and in-depth analysis, is expanding its reach in the podcasting industry with the launch of Economist Podcasts+. This new subscription service aims to build on the success of its award-winning shows and support future growth. With the podcast audience doubling in the past three years to 5 million monthly unique listeners, the audio platform has become the fastest-growing medium for The Economist, allowing the organization to bring its journalism to new and diverse audiences.
The subscription to Economist Podcasts+ will provide exclusive access to a range of exciting content. One of the highlights is Boss Class, a limited series on management hosted by the author of The Economist’s leadership and management column, Bartleby. In this podcast, Andrew Palmer will engage with CEOs, anthropologists, and experts to explore the future of management, covering topics such as hiring and hybrid work.
Subscribers will also enjoy The Weekend Intelligence, a Saturday edition of The Economist’s popular show on world news, The Intelligence. This weekend episode, hosted by Ore Ogunbiyi and Jason Palmer, will feature narrative storytelling and deeper reporting from Economist writers around the world.
In addition, Economist Podcasts+ will grant subscribers access to The Economist’s entire collection of weekly podcasts, covering a wide range of subjects including business, science and technology, China, and American politics. This comprehensive offering reflects the breadth and originality of The Economist’s journalism.
Launching in mid-October, Economist Podcasts+ will be available for $/£4.90 per month or $/£49 per year. Customers who pre-order between now and the launch will receive a 50% discount on an annual subscription. Current subscribers to The Economist will automatically have access to all the benefits of Economist Podcasts+ at no additional cost. Non-subscribers will still have access to the weekday episodes of The Intelligence, as well as sample episodes of weekly shows and limited series podcasts.
The decision to introduce a subscription tier for podcasts aligns with The Economist’s overall approach to its digital and print business. The organization believes in producing premium journalism for its subscribers worldwide at a fair price. This initiative will further enable investment in audio offerings and maintain the high-quality standards associated with The Economist.
The Economist’s podcast portfolio has grown significantly since the release of its first podcast in 2006. Today, it includes a variety of shows that demonstrate the organization’s journalistic expertise and originality. Some notable podcasts in the lineup are The Intelligence, a daily podcast on global news; World in Brief, a daily news briefing updated three times a day; Checks and Balance, a weekly podcast on American politics; Money Talks, a weekly show on markets, the economy, and business; Babbage, a weekly podcast on science and technology; Drum Tower, a weekly podcast on China; Editor’s Picks, featuring three essential articles read aloud from the latest issue; The Prince, a limited series on China’s leader, Xi Jinping; and Next Year in Moscow, a limited series on Russia’s future.
