In a strategic move to bolster its podcasting offerings, NPR has announced the appointment of Collin Campbell as Senior Vice President of Podcasting Strategy and Franchise Development. Campbell, a veteran in the podcasting industry, will assume his role in December, operating from NPR West’s Culver City office.
Campbell brings a rich blend of journalism and podcasting expertise, a combination that NPR’s Acting Chief Content Officer, Edith Chapin, believes will enhance NPR’s pioneering podcast work and adapt it to the continuously evolving media landscape. Podcasting, with its capacity for in-depth storytelling and explanatory journalism, aligns naturally with NPR’s mission, making Campbell’s appointment a significant step forward.
Before joining NPR, Campbell held the role of Executive Editor for New Show Development at Gimlet Media, an acclaimed podcast studio. He was instrumental in launching several successful limited series, such as Conviction, Crime Show, Welcome to Your Fantasy, 544 Days, and others. Prior to Gimlet, he served as Executive Producer for Original Content at Audible, where he developed a series of innovative on-demand audio programs, including Sincerely, X, Evil Has a Name, and Making of a Massacre.
In his new role, Campbell will leverage his experience and passion for mission-driven journalism to shape NPR’s future in podcasting. In the past, Campbell has been able to meld journalism with an understanding of audiences and the business of podcasting to create successful content. He plans to carry this ethos forward at NPR.
Campbell’s career in public radio began in 2003 as an associate producer for Morning Edition at WNYC. His work at WNYC led to the creation of two national programs with significant podcast audiences – The Takeaway and Freakonomics Radio. Later, at KPCC, one of the largest public radio stations in the U.S., Campbell transformed a broadcast radio-rooted culture, launched new programs, and built and hired teams.
A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and Columbia Journalism School, Campbell also served as an Adjunct Instructor and Advisor at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia.
This strategic move by NPR is a testament to the growing influence of podcasts in the media landscape and the need for traditional media houses to adapt to changing audience preferences.
