Podster, a Danish startup previously known for adapting local podcasts for international audiences, is venturing into new territory: original programming for children. The move is a natural progression for the Podster team, which has a history of creating content for young audiences.
A number of Podster’s team members are already well-versed in the art of crafting engaging content for young listeners. Henriette Høj Gharib and Lars Peter Ilsø Larsen, Podster’s co-founders, previously developed Fairytell, a children’s audio app, in 2017 before selling it to Podimo in 2021.
“There is a significant gap in the market for children’s audio content,” argues Podster’s CEO and co-founder, Henriette Høj Gharib. “As adults, we have a responsibility to create content that is fun, educational, and invites shared listening experiences.”
Their first original production is a true crime audio series for kids, titled “Verdens vildeste banditter” in Danish, or “The World’s Wackiest Bandits” in English. The series aims to engage young listeners with thrilling tales of bank heists, prison escapes, and scams. Penned by popular Danish children’s book author Thomas Brunstrøm, the series is expected to have broad appeal.
Gharib says, “Children are incredibly intrigued by police and prisons. We wanted to create a children’s story with a good sense of humour and reached out to Thomas, who truly understands how to write for both children and parents.”
Podster’s move is also backed by data. “In the United States, a remarkable 48% of all children listen to podcasts weekly, with parents joining in 71% of the time. If we can create a great, fun and educational offering that immerses children in exciting worlds without screen time, we have achieved our goal,” Gharib adds.
While the series is designed with a global audience in mind, Podster plans to release it in Denmark first before expanding to other markets.
